At Lutheridge+Lutherock our Handbell Weekends are very popular. We have scheduled two sessions for February, 2010! You may want to think about joining us one of the following weekends. The Handbell Workshop is held Friday–Sunday, on the weekends of February 19-21 or February 26-28.

This enriching Handbell Event allows individual ringers or entire bell choirs to gain new skills for their music ministry back home. Each weekend features in-depth instruction, fellowship, worship, and performance with an advanced and intermediate track. Choirs will leave with polished pieces that can be used for each of the seasons of the church year.

Cost per Person for 2010 includes lodging, Friday dinner through Sunday lunch, instrument insurance, and other program costs.

The Holidays, The Biltmore & You...

At Lutheridge+Lutherock we have many traditions. One of our very favorites is our "Biltmore Excursions" during the month of December. Mmmmm, yes it is not only fun, it is an adventure in Beauty, History and Architecture. Leave the world behind for just a little while and become guests of Lutheridge and the Vanderbilts. Imagine the Biltmore Estate all "Done-Up" for the holidays. Trees, Decorations, Music and the holiday glow of thousands of twinkle lights. Oh yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. It is a feast for the eyes.

So here is the deal, you arrive on a on Friday evening after dinner. Enjoy a quiet evening with hot chocolate around the fireplace.
After breakfast on Saturday, travel to the Biltmore Estate on your own, or with new friends from Lutheridge, to tour the house. Visit the winery, farmhouse, and many other features of the 8,000 acre estate. Have lunch on your own at the Bistro or Deerpark Restaurant. Save some time for Christmas shopping in Downtown Asheville and the Grove Arcade.
Return to Lutheridge for dinner. We will have a fire going for you to roast marshmallows and reflect on your day. A storyteller will tell some stories and we will sing some songs together.

Sunday includes breakfast at Lutheridge, optional worship at Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden, and time to relax at Lutheridge or go back to Asheville for more Christmas shopping before returning home.

NEW FOR 2009! The Biltmore Estate has opened four new rooms; these rooms have been closed to visitors for nearly 100 years! One of the newly-renovated rooms is the Louis the XV room where the Vanderbilt's only daughter, Cornelia, was born in 1900. It is also in this same room that Cornelia gave birth to her two sons, George Cecil in 1925 and William Cecil in 1928. The Estate also has a new audio tour that includes these new rooms.

Ski LEAP 2010...

Winter can be a magical time of year here in the mountains of North Carolina. The skiing is great, the sunshine is bright and the pine trees add a certain grace to this very special time of year. At Lutheridge+Lutherock we have created some amazingly fun programs to embrace this very special season.

Let us do all the work of coordinating ski rentals and lift tickets and enjoy our group rate discount! We also supply group building games, an evening campfire, and youth-friendly worship. Come on Friday evening. Enjoy an early breakfast and all day Saturday on the slopes. End the day with supper, fun and worship then have a good breakfast on Sunday before traveling home. Adults must accompany and supervise youth. Groups are responsible for transportation to and from ski slopes. Lutheridge guests ski at Wolf Ridge. Guests staying at Lutherock will ski at Sugar Mountain.

Friday - Sunday ~ NOVEMBER 13-15, 2009

Middle School and High School youth will hear that God has a plan for them ~ and learn how to listen and discern God's will for their lives. Pastors are not the only ones called by God. Martin Luther taught that ALL work is holy when done with integrity. Our goal as Christians is to discover the best way to use the gifts that God has given us to build up God's kingdom here and now. Bible study, gift inventories, creative exercises, and practice in active listening will help young people claim their unique abilities and explore ways to use them to God's glory. This retreat will REDEFINE "SUCCESS" with an emphasis on service over self, inspiring students to make a difference in the world. The teacher for this retreat is Pastor Mary Canniff-Kuhn, Lutheridge Program Director.

Pastor Tim Canniff-Kuhn, LLMI Interim Vice President, will lead a Faith Alive Retreat on CHRISTIAN VALUES the same weekend. Middle School youth will explore Jesus' values and compare them to our own. This retreat has received rave reviews from kids and adults each time it has been offered.

Faith Alive retreats also give middle school and high school youth a true camp experience including games, skits, stories, songs, campfire and creative worship. Lutheridge counselors provide supervision and add their own faithful witness and joyful attitude to the experience.

You Are Never Too Old For Camp! Bring Your AARP Card...

Camp isn’t just for kids anymore. Yes, we still do plenty of child friendly ministry and programs, but our fastest growing age group is people eligible for AARP cards.
Lutherhostel, Autumn Adults, Christmas at Biltmore, Fall Color family weekends, Apple Festival, Handbell Weekends, Wild Women, Create in Me, and more are all offered at Lutheridge and Lutherock. Some of these programs, like Lutherhostel, are specifically designed for older adults while others bring all generations together.
You may remember camp as bunk beds and corn dogs. You are in for a treat at Lutheridge and Lutherock where we have comfortable, motel style rooms and a chef on site who is capable of the most demanding special menus. You will love his chicken salad!
Experiencing a retreat setting will allow you to focus on God in a way not possible in day to day life. The intentional Christian Community created will allow you to grow from the faith and experiences of others.

L.E.A.P. Into An Adventure...

Summer is almost over and for some, school will be starting soon. Our summer trips are over and those lazy sunny days are quickly becoming memories. Schedules and life return to normal as Autumn settles in. Now is the time church programs, youth groups and schools start back up, you may want to consider a L.E.A.P. at Lutheridge or Lutherock as a wonderful way to kick off the New Year!

A LEAP (Lutheridge or Lutherock Environmental Adventure Program) is a customized retreat that is great for groups of all shapes and sizes. A LEAP gives you the ability to custom design an experience for your youth, family, college students, school, or any other group you can think of. LEAP is offered at both Lutheridge and Lutherock and is truly custom designed by you with the help of our staff. We have pre-planned LEAP's to help you get started in your planning, but the experience is custom-tailored just for you.

LEAP is perfect for:
•Youth Groups desiring a weekend, fall break, or spring break away
•Family/Intergenerational Groups desiring to interact with one another
•School Groups looking for time away to build relationships & experience community that can only be formed in a retreat setting
•College Clubs/Groups interested in adventure and experiences that can only be accomplished in time away
•Homeschool Groups looking for interaction, adventure, and Christian Community

A typical LEAP group arrives on Friday evening and departs after breakfast on Sunday morning. School groups often arrive during the week. A Lutheranch Guest

Congregations throughout the southeast are being counted! About three years ago, Lutheridge+Lutherock Ministries launched the Foundations for Faith Campaign: The Challenge. Part of this campaign helped with the purchasing of a little over 500 acres along the Alabama/Georgia state line. Lutheranch is LLMI’s third site for learning, renewal, and outreach to continue the mission of LLMI to provide times and places apart. In an area where the Lutheran Church is growing, Lutheranch will serve campers, congregations, and groups throughout the southeast, especially those in the Southeastern Synod. Have you seen Lutheranch? Have you heard? Have you been counted?

The Challenge campaign has reached $3.3 million in cash and pledges toward the $3.5 million campaign goal and a $4.9 million stretch goal! Many donors and campaign volunteers have accomplished this great achievement. To date 91 congregations have participated in a congregational campaign.

We are grateful to the many that have helped Lutheranch become a reality. Gifts to The Challenge campaign enabled the purchase of this land. What a blessing!

Everyone’s participation does make all the difference! Christian camping and retreating make a huge difference in the lives of young and old! Spirits are renewed through the ministries of Lutheridge, Lutherock, and Lutheranch.

For the guest who wrote to us, and for many like her, Lutheranch is a dream come true, as camping and retreating will be made available for more people young and old.

Now as we move forward, we need others to participate in this historic and exciting opportunity. Fall Color Weekend
October 16-18 (Friday-Sunday)
Enjoy the best of Autumn's beauty: crisp, sunny days and cool, starry nights; mountain trails and sparking waterfalls; surrounded by trees in brilliant color!
Enjoy on-site activities: crafts, campfires, hayrides, songs, stories and a staff-led outing to a nearby waterfall. Or set your own schedule and explore the beauty of the area on your own. Bring family and friends and meet lots of new ones. The weekend begins with fellowship and devotions on Friday night and ends with worship in the open-air chapel on Sunday morning. Fees (which vary according to lodging) include two nights lodging (with linens) and four meals, Saturday breakfast through Sunday breakfast. Saturday lunch is a picnic lunch you can take with you.

The Passion Walk...

Earlier this week we caught up with Van Van Horn, Lutherock Program Director. We wanted him to tell us about his very special program, “Passion Walk” or “L.D.R.” (Life, Death & Resurrection).

Tell me about the Passion Walk. What is it? What story does it tell?
Actually, it isn't the "Passion Walk" it is "L.D.R." (Life, Death, Resurrection). The staff acts out stories from the Bible during Jesus' time with the disciples. It goes right to the time He was handed over and crucified and then we have a service at the cross.

Lutheridge has a camp-wide vespers service on Sunday. Is this Lutherock's camp-wide vespers? Does it happen on Sundays?
We have a camp wide worship on Sundays and Fridays. This would be in addition to that, on Tuesday nights.

How do you decide who plays which person? Does the same staff play the same person each week?
We try to have the same people play the major characters, Jesus, etc. Everyone has an understudy.

When did “LDR” start? Who created it?
We started it in 2003 (my first summer here). It was the idea of Sanford Groff. We have changed it a lot since then, but using the same basic plan for it.

What kind of impact do you think it has on the campers and adults?
I think it is great for the adults and campers to see their counselors making this story an important part of their week at camp. With the changing themes each year L.D.R. still supports anything that they are studying during the week. I believe it helps to bring the story "alive" for folks especially when they see Jesus on the cross breathing His last breath. We follow that up with Jesus rising from the dead and we, of course, celebrate that.

58 Years of Amazing Volunteers...

At Lutheridge we are celebrating our 58th year of summer camp! The Camp and Conference Center is open year-round and for 58 years we have worked hard at keeping the grounds and buildings open and in good repair, it is a full time endeavor. Lutheridge is blessed to have a wonderful maintenance and housekeeping staff, but many times, it is volunteer groups that make the difference and come to help with our many various projects. Today we are going to talk a bit about these volunteers who come to “Camp” to work on projects, meet new friends and make a difference in our corner of the world, here at Lutheridge. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

Jimmy, Lutheridge Site Manager, is always looking for volunteer help. Groups of any size and skill set are welcome. As the head of the maintenance and housekeeping departments, Jimmy is never lacking a variety of volunteer projects. “We welcome any group to come and give of their time and talents. I have had groups of all ages and skill sets from men’s groups that are skilled in carpentry to family groups who are able to weed, scrub, and paint. I always have a project to fit any group. Being a non-profit and budget-driven ministry and to be able to carry on God’s work, it is necessary for us to call out for help from our amazing and dedicated friends and supporters of Lutheridge,” says Jimmy Styles. “Without volunteer help, we would not be able to accomplish new projects, upgrades, and necessary maintenance to our facilities and grounds.”

Groups are lined up with projects through conversations prior to the group’s arrival. “Because we look and depend so much on volunteer groups, it is important for us to learn the dynamics and break down of the group,” says Suzanne Delap. Suzanne handles bookings for Lutheridge and Lutherock for guest groups. “When groups call in, I generally try to find out basic information such as if the group is made of mainly youth, families, etc. However, a lot of the final planning falls to Jimmy as he talks with the groups in the weeks leading up to their arrival.”
Suzanne went on to say, with a smile, “Now there are some groups where this discussion is not necessary. We know the group because they have been here so many times before.”

One such group is Antioch Lutheran Church. Jim Pasour and his men’s group have been coming for years. When asked what draws his group to Lutheridge, Jim replied, “Antioch men’s group is always on the lookout for areas where we can volunteer our time and talents for a worthy cause. For a number of years the Antioch and St. Paul’s congregations in Dallas, NC, have been meeting for a Lutheridge Sunday once a year where we worship in Whisnant Chapel and then share a picnic lunch at Lakeside Lodge after worship. As a result, our men have seen the needs at Lutheridge and responded.” When asked why they return and what is so satisfying about volunteering at Lutheridge, Jim replied, “We enjoy the time together, working on a project, using each member’s various skills, and completing projects at Lutheridge. It’s great to be able to play a small part in maintaining our church camp. We have also enjoyed the relationship with Lutheridge staff and workers. Jimmy Styles has been great to work with, providing whatever is needed to make our time at Lutheridge successful. The workers in the kitchen always provide great food.”

Jerry and Wanda Butt echoed this comment. “Our oldest granddaughter went to Lutherock for summer camp. Jerry and I had been looking for a place where we felt we could make a difference. When we contacted Lutheridge, they said they could use our help.” With a chuckle, Wanda went on to say, “That was seven summers ago.”
Jerry and Wanda come up and become a part of the staff during the summer. Wanda helps in the office while Jerry helps in maintenance. “We like to serve,” Wanda said when asked why they come. “We found this place where we can make a difference. It is an awesome place and we love the people.” And their granddaughter? “She is a counselor at Lutherock this summer,” Wanda said with a smile.

Lutheridge is so lucky to be blessed with these same feelings from many different volunteer groups such as Morning Star Lutheran in Matthews, NC; St Luke’s Lutheran in Conover, NC; and Christ the King in Cary, NC, just to name a few. This spring, a youth group from Christ Lutheran in Charlotte, NC, spent their spring break at Lutheridge. This group of about 25 youth and adults usually work with Habitat for Humanity, but came to Lutheridge to help. During their stay, they replaced the roof on four camper cabins, painted the room in lower Bischoff, scrubbed and cleaned tables and chairs, and straightened a falling shelter and then reinforced the braces, whew, these folks sure get things done!

YouTube & Sunday Vespers...

Sunday evening vespers have been a tradition at Lutheridge for years. For the first time last year, we taped the vesper service each week and uploaded the videos to YouTube. Now, the parents, grandparents, family, and friends could share in that experience. These videos were so widely watched and appreciated we decided to do it again this year!

Sundays in the summer are exciting times at Lutheridge. Around lunchtime, counselors come in from their night off to have lunch and prepare to meet a whole new group of campers. Areas and cabins are prepared to welcome campers that will spend a week in a Christian community building and sharing their faith.

Then the campers arrive. Some are so eager to get here and get that top bunk they arrive thirty minutes to an hour before registration opens. The afternoon is spent moving campers into their cabins, meeting the counselor and other campers that will be their family for the week, and waving good bye to parents and grandparents. And the fun begins!

While the family heads back home, campers and their counselors are playing games, going over rules and expectations, and meeting many other campers from different places in the southeast. Then it is off to dinner.

Sunday evening ends with a camp-wide vespers service. For about an hour, all campers, adult leaders, and adult participants sit under Lakeside Lodge singing songs, meeting each other, and hearing a story from Pastor Mary.

So, as you drive home from dropping your camper off, imagine the fun he is having. Then on Monday or Tuesday, visit our website for the link to the YouTube videos. You can enjoy and experience a taste of camp. Or learn the songs to sing with your camper when he is home to help in continuing to build his faith. Scholarships and Camp: Makes A Difference...

In the past we have featured articles on our Faith Formation Stimulus Package (our outreach to families affected by the economic times) and camp scholarships.
These programs have been very successful and we have helped many kids who otherwise would not have gone to camp. We have received many heartfelt letters and thought we would share this one with you. We can all make a difference in the life of a young person.

Amy won't be able to come to camp this summer. She will be spending the summer with her father in Arkansas. Here is a small check ($100.00) for you to add to your scholarship fund. Last summer at camp changed Amy's life and my own in profound ways that I never thought possible. I will be forever grateful. You need to know a little more about Amy and her mom, lets call her Martha, so you can appreciate the full significance of this gift and the miracle that God worked in their lives. Martha's pastor (lets call him Pastor Joel) used to serve on the LLMI Board of Trustees. Last spring, he went to Martha and encouraged her to send Amy to camp. Martha said no. She had been divorced twice, was unemployed, and claimed she could not afford it. Pastor Joel did not know it at the time, but Martha was also dealing with a bad drug habit. Amy had dropped out of youth group at church and was starting to have trouble at school. Fortunately, Pastor Joel persisted. Together with his congregation and LLMI, Amy received a full scholarship to attend camp at Lutherock. That week literally changed Amy's life. She was physically challenged and the Holy Spirit touched her life in a profound way. Amy also re-connected with some old church friends while at camp. Amy was not the same person when she returned home. Thanks to Pastor Joel's help and encouragement, she once again attended youth group and arranged for a ride to Sunday worship. Martha noticed the difference and, last fall, was motivated to seek Pastor Joel's help to enroll in a drug treatment program. Amy and her mom still have a long journey ahead of them. It will not be easy for them, but they are no longer walking alone. The Christ who surrounded Amy with love and support at Lutherock, is walking alongside Amy and Martha. They now have hope for a better future.

In making a gift, Martha is not only saying thank you, but she is also recognizing the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of campers and guests at Lutheridge+Lutherock. In the Camp Season 2009 several campers will receive financial assistance to share in the Christ-centered camp communities this summer. Already, over $75,000 has been committed to the Faith Formation Stimulus Package. However, we expect to need to at least double this amount in order to meet all the anticipated requests for help this summer. If you know of a young boy or girl who could benefit from summer camp, please contact them and invite them to attend. Their situation does not need to be as dramatic as Amy's. What a joy it is to share together in a ministry that God uses to touch lives like Amy and Martha!

This year, Lutheridge celebrates our 57th year of Music Week. We have put together an amazing list of clinicians. The team of Linda Hasseler and Craig Courtney from Capital University will be leading the adult choir. The composer John Horman will be directing the Elementary Chorus. Wayne Wold, composer of hymns and organ and choral works, will be our Organ Clinician. Read on for a complete list of the clinicians we will have this summer.
We also have exciting and interesting classes and workshops scheduled for The Summer of 2009 Music Week.
Classes: Bible Study, Drumming, Guitar, Contemporary Worship, Reading Sessions, Organ/Keyboard, Clinicians’ workshops and Liturgical Arts.
Ensembles: Adult Choir, Flute Choir, Hymnfest Choir, Liturgical Dance, Advanced Recorder, Orcha/Band,
Daily morning and evening worship is centered on the Psalms.

Directs the Chapel Choir and Choral Union and teaches choral conducting. Active as guest conductor, adjudicator and clinician for choral events and festivals in United States. Bachelors degree, Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI…. Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts, Michigan State University. Taught elementary, junior high and high school choral music. A mezzo-soprano, performs, tours and records nationally and internationally. Toured France with the Robert Shaw Festival Chorus, soloist. Sang with Sir Neville Marriner, André Previn, Helmuth Rilling at Carnegie Hall. Toured with the Oregon Bach Festival choir and shares 2000 Grammy for Best Choral Performance for Penderecki’s Credo. Member ACDA, Ohio MEA, MENC and The Honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. Nurturing Capital University’s rich choral legacy, Hasseler continues to program the classic and contemporary a cappella sacred and secular choral literature. Dr. Hasseler shares her special talents with us this summer.

CRAIG COURTNEY Adult Accompanist, Workshop Clinician Editor, Beckenhorst Press and composer, choral clinician and accompanist, Columbus, OH. Bachelors and Masters in Piano Performance, studying with Raymond Dudley and Walter Levin at University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH. Studied piano with Illonka Deckers, Milan, Italy. Served as piano teacher and accompanist on faculty of Mozarteum and music minister at Salzburg International Baptist Church, Salzburg, Austria. In addition to accompanying Dr. Hasseler and the Adult Choir, Mr. Courtney will present two workshops introducing his own works: “The Composer’s Heart” and “Compositions Based on Psalms”.

WAYNE WOLD Organ Clinician Associate Professor of Music and College Organist, Hood College, Frederick, MD. Teaches music theory, composition, private organ and harpsichord lessons. An active church musician, composer, author, performer and clinician with over 200 compositions published for organ, choirs, children’s musicals, recorder suite and hymns for congregational singing. Published poet with many hymn and anthem texts in print. Bachelor of Music, Concordia College…MSM, Wittenberg University, Springfield, OH… Doctor of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA. Served as a clinician for Choristers Guild, AGO, Hymn Society, ALCM, serving as president of ALCM Region One. Served on the editorial board for the Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Dr. Wold will present organ and keyboard workshops daily, prepare the Hymn Fest choir, and lead the Hymn Fest Thursday evening, July 16, at St. James Episcopal Church, Hendersonville, NC.

JOHN HORMAN Elementary Choral Director of Music and Organist, Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church, Kensington, MD, where he writes extensively for the choirs. Retired teacher of 26 years, Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery County, MD, spending 21 years at the elementary level and 5 years at the secondary level teaching general music and choir. Active choral clinician and consultant; has directed over 50 choir festivals in the last 10 years. Writer and contributor, Silver Burdette and Macmillan Publishing Houses, school music series. Served on Choristers Guild Board of Directors, 3 years as president, and the Board of Directors of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. Editorial Staff for Abingdon press, Church Music for Children and Church Music Workshop. Many choral anthems in print as well as children’s musicals (By the Sea, Paul and Co., Angel Band). John will work with our singers who have finished 3rd – 5th grade, present a reading session of elementary choir music and a workshop entitled “Searching for Unison: The Ongoing, Neverending Challenge of Helping Children and Adults Match Pitch and Sing in Tune".

MICHAEL ZEMEK High School Choral Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education, Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. Conducts the Augustana Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble and the Collegiate Chorale, teaches music methods, conducting and research courses, supervises music education students and advises the collegiate MENC and ACDA chapters. Director, Youth Choir at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, IA. Serves as guest conductor and clinician. Serves as Program Director for Young Lutherans Sing, a national summer choral experience sponsored by ALCM for middle school singers. Formerly served as Summer Program Director for Lutheran Summer Music Academy and festival. BA in vocal, instrument and classroom Music Education, Gustavus Adlophus College, St. Peter, MN. Plans monthly Taize Prayer Services and oversees the Liturgical Arts Guild, the Movement Choir, and the African Drumming Choir. David is a graduate of the Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ. Served as Minister of Music and Fine Arts, Northwoods Presbyterian Church, Houston, TX for 12 years. Served six years (2002-08) on the National Board of Directors for AGEHR, Inc. Summer is upon us, the weather has turned consistently warmer, the leaves are on the trees and flowers are everywhere. At Lutheridge+Lutherock we are geared up and ready for our favorite season. This article is the final installment of our Summer Camp staff. We hope you feel like you have gotten to know a bit about who they are and the passion and expertise they bring to "Summer Camp". Hi, I'm Megan and will be the Lutheroad Area Director. I graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor's degree in 2007. I was a Spanish and Secondary Education Major. After graduating, I worked full-time for a year in Charleston. I was on summer staff here at Lutheridge in 2005 and in 2008. I also I studied ESL and received my TEFL certificate. For the past year I have been living in Hermosillo, Mexico teaching English. I'm looking forward to this summer because I want to help children grow in their faith in God and show them how important He is in their lives. To me Lutheridge offers a place where can grow in their faith while having fun at a beautiful place apart. I truly feel blessed to be able to take part in this amazing opportunity.

Hi! I am Karen Plonk and I will be KidzCamp Director and Scheduler for the summer of 2009. Currently I am the proud teacher of seventeen incredible first graders in Mount Pleasant, SC. I am looking forward to working at Lutheridge this summer because along my spiritual journey Lutheridge is always a favorite weekend stop. Now I can stay longer. I am so excited to be part of this summer’s team! Lutheridge is friendship, adventure, learning, laughs, songs, and a time away to feel God’s love in everything we do together.

Hello- My name is Elliott Cox and this summer I am pleased to be serving you as one of your General Duty Area Directors. I just recently graduated from Newberry College with a degree in Media Communications. After this summer I will be spending a year doing team ministry through Youth Encounter, traveling throughout the country and also spending four months overseas in Paupa New Guinea. I'm really excited about this opportunity to spread God's word throughout the world. One thing I'm looking forward to this summer is the opportunity to serve Lutheridge in a different capacity other than being a counselor. To me Lutheridge offers an opportunity to experience the real world; a world where sharing God's love with those around you is one of the most important things. This is just one of the many reasons why I love Lutheridge so much and keep coming back summer after summer.

My name is Chris Rivers and this will be my 4th year on the summer staff at Lutherock and I will be changing my role from counselor to be the OAP assistant. I was a camper for so many years at Lutherock and I knew it was a place that I wanted to work and change peoples lives. Over the last 3 summers working at Lutherock has changed my life and brought me closer to God. Seeing each and every one of my campers come to camp and have an amazing week, and see the joy of each of there faces is why I come back every year. Lutherock is truly a place apart and I can think of no other place to spend my summers.

Hi - I'm Liza Anne Ballentine and will be the waterfront director this summer! Currently, I am teaching preschool in Charleston, SC. I'm looking forward to this summer because Lutheridge is the greatest place on earth! I can't wait to spend time with silly children and grow in my own faith through the relationships I develop. To me Lutheridge offers an incredible week to have fun playing in God's creation with new friends while learning about Him and how wonderful He is!

Apple Festival...

Even though we have barely touched into the "Summer Season" here at Lutheridge+Lutherock we are always planning a few seasons in advance. A favorite event is the annual Apple Festival. This year it will be the first weekend in October, the 2nd-4th.
There is nothing like the crisp days of autumn in the Appalachian Mountains. The air is clear, the sunshine bright

and warm during the day and the views, well, on a clear day I believe you can see forever. Life is short and meant to be lived well. So treat yourself to some autumn and mountain magic, bring the family and make a memory that will be long-lived and filled with joy.
Imagine a spectacular weekend filled with a many activities, including a hike to Cross Rock for a breathtaking view, you can also climb the ropes course, pick apples or make apple cider, feast on autumn meals, and take pleasure in sitting around the campfire and gaze at the star filled mountain sky. We also will be offering a special hayride and many types of crafts for the kids! Cost includes two nights lodging, Saturday breakfast through Sunday breakfast as well as all program costs. Summer Camp Our Staff Part 3...

At Lutheridge+Lutherock Camp and Conference Center we are blessed to have staff that continues to return year after year. It is nice to count on these special folks who make your childrens camp experiences rich and magical.
This is part 3 of our continuing series of articles featuring our "Summer Senior Staff".

Hi, I am Jen Bacher and I will be the Program Assistant at Lutherock. The first time I went to Lutherock as a camper I was homesick all week. Eleven years later, it’s hard for me to imagine a summer where I didn’t spend at least a week on that mountain. I was a camper for seven summers. Now I’m getting ready for my fourth year on staff, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my summer! As a camper, you learn a lot about yourself, facing challenges and growing in faith. And as a counselor you take all that knowledge and share it with your campers, challenging them, teaching them, and still growing in faith. Being a part of the Lutherock staff has been such an amazing blessing. I consider everyone I’ve worked with to be a part of my family, and I still talk to many of my campers. So much of my relationship with God has come from my experiences serving Him at Lutherock. I’ve come a long way from that first week as a homesick camper. Now I’m a campsick college student.

I am Liz Propst and I am blessed to be the dining hall director at camp this summer. At summer camp I keep an eye out for campers with food allergies and anyone who is missing home at mealtimes. Lutheridge offers campers the opportunity to live without all of their technology toys for a week and to live in a community …where relationships, laughter, and getting along with a variety of new friends is learned and practiced. Every week at camp I am overwhelmed with the joy in Jesus that is so alive at our Friday night closing campfire at the lake. This summer my oldest grandchild at four will be at Lutheridge Day Camp and I know that he will have a week where he is loved as a child of God and will be treated to a week of fun and growing in a safe and age appropriate week of activities under the guidance of well trained and enthusiastic Christ centered counselors.

Hi, I am Micah Miller and I will be at Lutherock this summer as the General Duty Crew Chief. I am a pastor’s kid; I went to church weekly, was part of the youth group and even was part of council to represent our youth. I struggled through high school trying to keep my faith. Nearing my senior year of high school my faith was gone. Seeing the struggles my father had, which eventually came into our home, there was no way I was going to believe in something that created this earth yet tore my family apart. As the year passed, I turned back to my faith life. I made new friends and started to reconnect with my family. During this time I became eligible to apply to as camp staff. It was a hard choice, but I knew I had to do something to regain my faith. I have now been on staff for several years and I can officially say camp has changed my life. It has changed the way I look at things, the way I treat others, and the way I worship God. Being on staff has brought enjoyment and excitement to my life. You build a Christian-based family with the staff. I believe my calling has been to help young teens, struggling with their faith, to stay strong and to never give up on their faith. Camp Lutherock is truly “a place apart.” It is a place were young adults and kids can come and find themselves, and their true faith.

Hi, I am Erin and I will be on Senior Staff at Camp Lutherock. I first attended Camp Lutherock during the summer of '98. Even though camp was a huge challenge for me that year, I fell in love and returned every summer after. My first summer on staff was in 2005. I spent 2 summers as a counselor, before coming back in 2008 as the Outdoor Adventure Program Area Director. In my free time I enjoy being outdoors, reading, working out, and spending time with family and friends. The ministry of LLMI and Lutherock have impacted my life greatly. My experiences at Lutherock enabled me to first accept my Christian faith as my own, rather than something that my parents chose for me. Lutherock has challenged me and caused me to grow as a person. I am stronger and more outgoing because of my time at camp.

Hi - I'm Andrea Stover and will be doing Lutheroad this summer. Currently, I am finishing my last semester at Lenoir-Rhyne University. I'm looking forward to this summer because I'll have the chance to learn about a new place and share God's love in different and exciting ways. Though I haven't spent a ton of time there, I can already tell that Lutheridge offers a place where everyone's loved and able to be themselves.

Lutherhostel, November 1-6th...

ALOA is the national Association of Lutheran Older Adults, (50 and older).They are heading up a very special event here at Lutheridge. It is their Lutherhostel program. It will be held November 1-6th. Now is the time to make your reservations. It will be a fun and interesting several days including a trip to the nearby Biltmore Estate, which will be gearing up for the holidays! North Carolina Lutherhostel is a unique educational adventure for the older adult. No particular previous knowledge or study is presupposed, no credit is offered and no
exams or grades are involved. Lutherhostel holds events at various sites through out the year. These events foster opportunities for intellectual, social, and spiritual growth. Although worship experiences and presentations are conducted from the Lutheran perspective, non-Lutherans are most welcome.
Lutheridge Conference Center: Picturesquely situated on 160 acres just south of Asheville, NC, this conference center features a variety of conference facilities including high comfort motel-style facilities, a professionally trained chef and catering staff, state of the art meeting facilities, as well as a lake, pottery studio, and high adventure activities.

Former Bishop of the Florida- Bahamas Synod and a native North Carolinian, Pastor Trexler graduated from Duke University and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. Following his ordination in 1970, he served parishes in Miami, Florida;
Greenwood, South Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; and Norfolk, Virginia. His 1991 doctoral thesis was “Church Architecture as Communicator of Incarnation
Theology”. In retirement, Bill and his wife, Karla, are year-round residents of Lutheridge.
Storyteller:
Rev. Mary Canniff-Kuhn
Pastor Mary is Co-Director of Program at Lutheridge with her husband, Pastor Tim. She
is also a potter, painter, and storyteller. Her passion is connecting faith and art
by encouraging creativity as spiritual practice. Pastor Mary has been telling Gospel stories to listeners of all ages for more than 20 years. Together, Pastors Tim and
Mary have raised three boys at Lutheridge and sent them out into the world.
Retreat Study:
Pastor Trexler will lead us in a study of architectural elements that have shaped
worship space over the centuries. We will consider how our theology influences
decisions related to church design. There will be visits to a variety of sites where we will view and reflect on the surroundings as places for worship. We will explore the effects that our worship spaces have on us as we experience them over
time.

Hey! This is Drew Yoos, the Pioneer B Area Director for Summer 2009 at Lutheridge! Right now I am a senior at Furman University about to graduate with a degree in History and Philosophy. I am so excited about returning to Lutheridge for another summer! It is just a place where my creativity comes alive so I can share God's love with kids in different ways than what they are used to. Lutheridge is a place where kids can truly connect with God's creation and with others through games, fun, singing, and laughing. Hi, I'm Jenna Quigley and will be a Lutheroad Area Director this summer. Currently, I am Junior Public Relations major at the University of South Carolina. I'm looking forward to this summer because I have the opportunity to spend it on top of a mountain, be surrounded by wonderful people, and have the chance to be a part of so many walks of faith. To me Lutheridge is a place that offers a place for fun, peace, and self-reflection. Lutheridge is a place where a mix of silliness and growth enables a week of learning in love and joy in Christ. A "place a-part" that is reminder of how a perception of life can be lived everywhere.

Greetings! My name is Ben Witcher and I'm going to be the Hill Top Area Director for this summer. I'm from Augusta, Georgia and I'll be graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne in May with a degree in Political Science. In all my summers as a camper, Lutheridge always offered me a time to recharge my spiritual batteries and rediscover the joys God's grace. I am excited about the opportunity to help build Christian communities with the campers and staff from week to week, and I pray that we can help each camper grow in their faith and relationship with God.

Hi - I'm Kevin Kraus and will be the Dining Hall director for the summer of 2009. Currently, I am a senior at the University of Georgia, hoping to graduate soon with a degree in Geography, Atmospheric Science concentration. I'm looking forward to this summer because being at a place apart such as Lutheridge with tons of wacky, crazy kids just gives a big thrill to me, and I can't think of any better way to spend a summer. Faith Alive! Summer Program...

FAITH ALIVE! is a very popular Spring and Fall program here at Lutheridge. It is always a joy to see a group of happy and vibrant participants who are learning, sharing and enjoying their time here at camp. With this very special summer FAITH ALIVE! we combine learning about the faith of the Lutheran Tradition with the fun and creativity of camp. Each day includes teaching time with Bishop Gordy or Pastor Christensen and camp activities like crafts, swimming, games, singing, and camp music. Congregational leaders may come to participant in the teaching sessions as well as interact with youth during some camp activities.

FAITH ALIVE! campers are put in cabin groups with other youth from around the Southeastern Synod. The staff at Lutheridge provide supervision staying with the campers and sharing their unique faithful witness. We thought with summer fast approaching you would like to get to know our senior staff members. These are the folks that make our Summer Camp Program so fantastic. We know you will not only enjoy their company but the breadth of knowledge, skills and passion they bring to our summer Camp Program is remarkable.

My name is Travis Gamelin, and I will be one of the Craft Directors at Lutheridge this summer! I graduated from UCF with a degree in Radio/Television in 2005, and now teach Video Productions at a private Christian school. I also freelance for various types of video. I'm looking forward to my 5th summer on staff at Lutheridge after 3 great years as a counselor, and directing crafts last summer. I am so excited to be a part of this ministry, and to have the chance to create an environment for campers to grow and realize their creativity in a fun, safe place.

I'm Jacob Ridenhour and I'm currently working in Guest Services at Lutheridge. I will be one of two Outdoor Adventure Program Area Directors at Lutheridge for Summer 2009. I'm looking forward to the summer because I truly love spending time in the outdoors and seeing the benefits that the outdoor adventure program can bring to the lives of campers. The OAP program at Lutheridge offers challenges and adventures in a safe, Christian community where campers can bring home new experiences spent in God's creation from activities like rock climbing, white water rafting, and canoeing, along with a lifetime of memories and friendships.

Hi! My name is Maressa and will be the General Duty Area Director at Lutheridge. Right now I am at High Point University working on my Masters in Sports Studies (It's so fun!). I am really excited about this summer because I feel like every day at camp is the best day of my year; I am so blessed to get to work at Lutheridge! To me, Lutheridge offers a chance to meet some truly wonderful and gifted people, have OH so much fun and grow daily in my faith. I feel like it is my second home. Sometimes...I get “campsick” (it's true...).

Hi - I'm Elizabeth Sanders and I will be the Lakeside Area Director at Lutheridge. Currently, I am a junior at College of Charleston majoring in Media Communication. Crosstraining, Lenoire-Rhyne University & Lutheridge+Lutherock...

Lenoir-Rhyne University and Lutheridge+Lutherock Ministries will be offering Crosstraining, a Christian Outdoor Leadership Expedition, for all current students and incoming freshmen, earning you 3 hours of college credit under HES 140. Crosstraining combines Rock Climbing, Team Building, Backpacking, Whitewater Rafting, and a 30 hour “Solo” self-reflection experience. Crosstraining is three hours of college credit before the Fall 2009 semester begins. During your course you will travel on foot over some of God’s most beautiful country. You’ll learn how to pack all your gear in your backpack, cook a backcountry meal, and camp without leaving a trace.

We’ll start off learning skills for rock climbing such as tying knots, belaying, and rappelling, which fosters trust, confidence, and new skills. We’ll pack up from there and travel in the backcountry learning how to live in the wilderness using only what we have with us.

From there we will take time to learn how to read white water as well as learn paddle strokes and travel on whitewater. You will be emerged in a safe Christian setting where we will discuss leadership, participate in Bible study, and learn more about our Natural Surrounding. You’ll travel deep into the wilderness at the same time, learning how to get along with your peers and become a competent leader, not only in the outdoors but at home.

A total of 11 different meeting rooms, some in the housing areas, are available at Lutheridge+Lutherock for business needs and retreat gatherings. At Lutherock “The Crow's Nest” is not what you might expect to find at a wilderness camp. This year-round, two-story retreat center has fifteen rooms with private baths! There is a meeting room, large lounge area with a wood-burning fireplace, large windows overlooking the mountains, a dining room, and a light industrial kitchen. The center is handicapped accessible. (A two-night minimum stay is required for weekend retreats.) Lutherock also features “The Founder's Lodge” which is a dormitory style facility with two sleeping areas (accommodating 24 each). There is a main room with a wood burning fireplace and light industrial kitchen. The Founder's Lodge is not heated and is open seasonally: April 1st through November 1st. An open-air pavilion with a built-in grill is located off the back of the Founder's Lodge. Rustic and a lot of fun!

“The Kohnjoy Inn” is the most comfortable and private of all lodging options at Lutheridge. With a sleeping capacity of 32, the Kohnjoy has sixteen individual rooms with private bathrooms. Rocking chairs are situated on the deck for quiet time.
A cozy two-story house, Bacot is also a wonderful housing option for small groups wishing for a more secluded, intimate ambiance. This eight-bedroom house is equipped with a full kitchen, two gathering areas, and four bathrooms. The central gathering area upstairs is perfect for small group meetings as well as lounging around the stone fireplace.

Why A Christian Camp...

Why a Christian Camp? Lutheridge+ Lutherock Summer Camp will welcome thousands of campers this year. We will teach them concrete skills for Christian living, skills that they will use for a lifetime. We will affirm their gifts and coach them to affirm each other. Our staff supports and encourages our campers to stretch and grow, rejoicing in accomplishments and seeing failure as a chance to try again. Our goal is that every camper who comes to Lutheridge+Lutherock goes home closer to Jesus, knowing Him better and loving Him more.

Why choose our Christian Camp? Other camps boast improved skills in concrete, measurable areas: shots on goal. Most offer the chance to build self-esteem and develop teamwork through practice drills and competition. This is fine and can be valuable, but it is easy to be fooled into thinking that secular camps teach “real-life” skills that kids can use, and Christian camps do not. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The skills that campers will learn at Lutheridge+Lutherock this summer are just as tangible and useful.

Self-esteem and teamwork are emphasized, but will not be taught through drills and competition. Each camper will be supported and encouraged to try new things, to stretch and grow in ways that are appropriate. For some first-time campers, that will mean cutting their own meat or sleeping in a cabin. For high school youth it may be hiking 20 miles on the Appalachian Trail or putting a new roof on a Habitat cabin. Campers go home amazed at what they CAN do, not only by themselves, but as a team. Throughout the week, campers learn to live and work and play together. Middle school and high school campers spend time on the Group Interaction Course, a low ropes adventure that teaches campers problem solving and leadership skills. Campers are taught HOW to be encouraging and affirming of one another. Every child goes home feeling like a winner.

For parents and baptismal sponsors, sending a child to church camp is an excellent way to show commitment to the promises made on the child’s behalf at the baptismal font. A week at Lutheridge+Lutherock in no way replaces regular worship or involvement in a home congregation, but it does give youth a broader and deeper understanding of the church and of the faith which the church proclaims.

Our counselors are also important role models for campers. Talented college students, committed to Christ and excited about sharing their faith and love for children, receive two full weeks or more of intensive training before campers are entrusted to their care. They show campers that a life of faith is not only fulfilling, but also fun! They hear problems and offer advice to situations that campers just would not share with the “grownups” in their lives. And over and over, throughout the summer, they point to Jesus as THEIR counselor, their strength and joy. Young people expect parents, teachers, and pastors to do that, but when “cool” college counselors live their faith and mean it…then campers believe it can be true in their own lives…here and now.
At Lutheridge+Lutherock these are skills and attitudes that can be put to use tomorrow and will last a lifetime. Few of today’s children will still be leading cheers or playing soccer when they are fifty. But they will still be relating to people in their family, workplace and neighborhood. They will still be children of God living out the covenant of their baptism.

Springtime in the Mountains...

Winter is almost behind us and it is time to make plans for some “Springtime Fun”.
What better tonic to get into the groove of a new season than a Retreat at Lutheridge?
Have you been to the Biltmore Estate lately? Imagine spending the day at one of America’s premier historic Estates, during the “Biltmore Festival of Flowers”.

The gardens will be in full color; come and walk the extensive grounds and enjoy the beauty of the Wisteria, Roses, Tulips and Azaleas. The gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead with such brilliance and foresight that they are as magical today as they were almost 100 years ago. Olmstead is considered the father of American landscape architecture and designer many well-known urban parks such as Central Park in New York City. Arrive at Lutheridge on Monday. Your housing will be ready and if your group would like a space to have time together, we can provide that. Enjoy time on your own at Lutheridge, or visit the North Carolina Arboretum, take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, visit the Folk Art Center, or any activity that will bring you joy! Lutheridge staff will greet you at dinner to let you know about your time here.
After breakfast at Lutheridge on Tuesday you depart for the 8,000-acre Biltmore Estate. We will provide you with directions and ideas of what to do while at Biltmore. Lunch is on your own at one of the Estate's dining establishments. Meet us back at Lutheridge for dinner and devotions.

LEAP into spring! Lutheridge+Lutherock are offering a set of programs that were specifically created for school group retreats. What better way to celebrate the end of the school year? The spring season is growing in popularity. Take a moment and imagine spending your "Class Retreat" at the Biltmore Estate and nearby Riverbend Farm or Grandfather Mountain, home of the United Nations Biosphere Reserve. The LEAP Program also offers trips to the Pisgah National Forest which provides many opportunities for environmental learning and ski trips to Wolf Laurel, Sugar Mountain and Appalachian. The Buzz:
In addition to the bonding that occurs, there is a confidence that each student gains from the new experiences. The opportunity to push themselves and encourage others to do the same is a quality that stays with them well beyond the week on the mountain. In the past few years we have added a slide show from Lutherock to our graduation ceremony. It immediately became the highlight of the evening. I have run into many of our now 9th grade students over the fall - every one of them is still wearing their blue yarn from the closing campfire! My daughter is graduating from high school this year. She doesn't have her yarn bracelet anymore, but she still has fond memories of the time spent there. The staff is great. The activities are memorable. The chores, group games, and campfire devotions help expand each person no matter where they are in their personal walk. We are still waiting for our first negative feedback!!!

The staff took our ideas (we wanted a nature hike, canoeing, the Challenge Tower, and a cookout) they (Lutheridge/Lutherock) organized it, set it up, provided the proper staff (lifeguards, certified personnel, etc.) and all we did was show up! It couldn’t have been any smoother. The Challenge Tower was certainly a major highlight of our stay. Our children and staff commented on how good they felt about themselves after conquering such a fun, but challenging obstacle. Some children spoke of not being sure if they could do some of the challenges only to end up with more self-confidence than they came with!

Summer Camp Savings, Hurry...

Summer is fast approaching! At Lutheridge+Lutherock we have put together a splendid and varied array of Summer Camp Programs for kids of all ages. Sign-up before March 15th to receive the best price of the season.

At Lutheridge each camper is part of a cabin group of up to eight campers and one college-age counselor. Christian community, making friends and teamwork are stressed, assuring that each camper is valued and encouraged. Regular camp activities include swimming, crafts, games, hikes, singing, campfires and more! Creative Bible study and worship are a part of each day’s schedule. Younger campers canoe in the lake on site and end the week with a Water Olympics. Campers who are middle school age and older experience the low ropes course on camp, go on an outing into Pisgah forest, and celebrate the week’s end with a dance.

At Lutherock our campers are part of an adventure group of up to eight youth and one college-age counselor. Christian community, making friends and cooperation are as important as assuring that each camper is valued and encouraged to be the best they can be. Our counselors build a relationship with each camper, nurturing their faith journey during the week they are at camp and beyond. Our regular camp activities include the group interaction course, ropes courses, loop hike, rock slide, ice-cream making, singing, campfires, and much more. Creative Bible study and worship are a part of each day’s schedule. Outdoor adventure programs include additional activities such as rafting, backpacking, caving, rock climbing, and rappelling.

We have also created and are launching a new “Music & Drama Camp”.
At M.A.D. Camp the kids will enjoy days filled with music, drama, and a whole new cast of friends! Campers will perform the musical "AMERICAN IDEAL" on Friday afternoon. Families are invited to attend. Mornings will be spent in rehearsals and afternoons and evenings in regular camp activities such as swimming, crafts, games, hikes, campfires, and more. Recently Pastor Mary Canniff-Kuhn, Lutheridge co-director of program, and coordinator of the summer Campfirmation program, received the following heartfelt email from Keith Buterbaugh, a Sunday school teacher at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Douglasville, Georgia:

“I have taught Sunday school for six years. Two years ago I was struggling; my class size was dwindling and my success rate was too. It had been a long while since I’d had one of those magic moments in my classroom where the kids face lights up, you can see the wheels turning and the light bulb comes on over their head. None of that was happening and I was starting to doubt myself. I prayed and waited. The Lord heard my prayer and when Sunday School started in September 2007, my class size had tripled over what it had been. One Sunday I asked the class the question ‘Have you ever felt like you were in the presence of God?’ I went on to describe the miracles I’d witnessed in life including when my children were born….Then it happened. A usually quiet, soft-spoken girl was bursting at the seams, wildly raising her hand and dying to share her story. ‘At Campfirmation this and at Campfirmation that’. There was no end to it. I just sat back and grinned and let her go on for 20 minutes. Now I’d like to thank you for making it possible.”

Summertime is a magical time of year here at Lutheridge+Lutherock, we relish the long languid days filled with the laughter and joy of our Summer Campers. We have created many terrific programs for kids of all ages. Christian community, making friends, teamwork and creative Bible Study are key to making the camp experience as wonderful and memorable as possible. At camp our days are filled with many activities such as Music and Drama, Outdoor Games, Swimming, Canoeing, Singing Campfires, Camaraderie and Arts & Crafts. The goal for our campers is to have fun, grow in faith, and learn something new everyday.
Lutheridge+Lutherock Ministries believes all children and youth should have a summer camp experience, regardless of their family’s financial situation. In response to uncertain economic times in our country, we have recently developed a “Faith Formation Stimulus Package”. Simply put, the program is specifically designed to service our campers whose parents may have been layed-off or have recently lost their jobs. We feel that it is important to “give back”. It may be cold and wintry today but before you know it the daffodils will be popping out and summer will be here. What are your plans for the kids this summer? Lutheridge+Lutherock Summer Camp is gearing up for another busy season. We have been working hard on all of our activity schedules for our 2009 Summer Camp season.
We are proud to announce one of our newest "camp" progams.
M.A.D. Camp - Music and Drama Camp. Enjoy music, drama, and a whole new cast of friends. Campers will perform the musical "AMERICAN IDEAL" on Friday afternoon. Families are invited to attend. Mornings will be spent in rehearsals and afternoons and evenings in regular camp activities such as swimming, crafts, games, hikes, campfires, and more. If you've ever wanted to be in the show, this is the camp for you!
"The AMERICAN IDEAL" shines the spotlight on four contestant who are competing to be the next "American Ideal". Tonight's theme is "Gospel Music Night". During the production of this live TV show, contestants Willa Wynn, Anita Ward, and Neil Downe discover, with the help for fellow contestant Emma Tate, the truth about themselves as "Reality TV" takes on a whole new meaning. This humorous, tongue-in-cheek look at fame, fortune and flim-flam turns popular culture on its head and shines the spotlight of God's truth about humility on the hearts of contestants and audience alike.
M.A.D. Camp is for Campers that will have completed grades 4-6 for summer 2009.
